Two Ways to Style a Slip Dress

Two Ways to Style a Slip Dress

After years of trying different slip dresses, I have finally found one that works for me! Now comes the fun part: finding new ways to style it so it can be a versatile staple in my closet. At first, I was a little intimidated even though a black slip dress is such a basic article of clothing but now that I have my undergarment situation down, this dress has quickly become one of the most worn pieces in my closet.

Two Ways to Style a Slip Dress

If you’re looking for a dress that you can easily dress up, and down, look no further! This slip dress from J.Crew is one of the best pieces you can add to your closet. The neckline is beautiful, it’s the perfect length, and I love that it has adjustable straps. I love that by simply swapping out shoes and accessories you can instantly take this dress from day to night.

Dressed Up

When it comes to getting dressed for date night, a wedding, or other dressy events, I’m all about simplicity. Give me a good dress, a comfy pair of shoes, and I’m good to go. This dress is simple but still brings the wow factor thanks to the silhouette and material so when I dress it up, it just needs a few pieces that’ll compliment it and not compete with it. These strappy heels from Sarah Flint (get $50 off your first SF purchase with code SARAHFLINT-BAHELLOHER) are my go-to heels for events (they’re SO comfy!) and I love how they look with a slip dress. To carry on the “less is more” approach, opt for a clutch like this one.

Dressed Down

Let’s face it: styling a slip dress for date night, weddings, and cocktail hour is easy. All you have to do is throw on a pair of heels and you’re good to go. Wearing a slip dress casually is a whole different story, especially if the dress is a dark color. To help dress down your slip dress, opt for a flat shoe like a sandal or sneaker. When styling my slip dress down, I love pairing it with these lace-up sandals from KAYU; they’re comfortable but elevated and add a fun detail to a simple outfit. Another easy way to dress down your slip dress is by giving it some shape with a simple belt or by simply tying your denim jacket around your waist as I did here! I especially like to do this in the cooler months or if I’ll be out at night.

What to Wear Under a Slip Dress

If you avoid slip dresses (or any tops with thin straps for that matter!) simply because you’ll have to deal with special undergarments, stop it right now! You should be able to wear the pieces you love and still be comfortable and feel confident.

When it comes to slip dresses, you have a two options: shapewear and a strapless bra OR shapewear and boob tape. If I’m going to be out for a long time, I usually opt for the latter. Boob tape is ten times more comfortable than a strapless bra and you don’t get any lines. I’ve been using this boob tape and love it so much! For shapewear, I’ll usually go with these high-waist briefs. They’re super comfy and smooth everything. If I’m feeling lazy, I’ll just go with a regular pair of high-waisted underwear.
