The Francis Review

Last week, Chris and I headed up to Portland, ME for a few days of R+R and had such an amazing experience staying at The Francis. The 15-room hotel was filled with charm, beautiful artwork, and let’s not forget about the architect of the building. Absolutely stunning. The hotel was once home to Mellen E. Bolster in 1881 and over the last few years, has undergone a restoration and turned into a hotel and is now on the National Park Service’s Registry of Historic Places, to ensure its preservation.

Pretty cool, huh?

The Francis Review

One of my favorite areas of the hotel (okay, it was all my favorite), was the front entrance. The double doors open into a small vestibule with the prettiest floors and the two doors leading into the main hallway had stain glass windows, something you don’t see too often anymore!

The Room

During our stay at The Francis, we stayed in the Terrace Suite, which was conveniently located on the first floor (easy to get in and out of the hotel to explore the city!) and had a cute little balcony with a bistro table and chairs, perfect for enjoying coffee in the mornings and watching the sunset at night!

First walking into the room, Chris and I were both blown away with the size of the room and the cute sitting area that separated the bedroom from the front door and bathroom. The minimalist design made the space feel large without feeling empty, if that makes sense! I also loved not feeling like we were stepping all over one another while getting ready.

The bathroom was complete with Malin + Goetz products, which I’ve never used before but I loved, loved, loved them. They all smelled delicious and worked wonders. I actually think this is the first time I’ve actually used the hotel shampoo and conditioner, which is saying a lot. I’m 100% going to be purchasing the body lotion, a candle, and the lip moisturizer.

From the second we stepped foot into The Francis until the second we left, the team members and even other guests we came in contact with were extremely helpful, kind, and enthusiastic about the city. Once we checked in, one of the team members took us to our room, gave us a run down of the features, and showed us how to use the TV/thermostat which I appreciated so much.

In addition to your typical amenities (in-room safe, thermostat for controlling the air conditioning, a TV, etc.), the rooms at The Franic also include Matouk Blankets (so cozy!!), beautiful hardwood flooring, and artwork by Nicole Wolf. The property also has an elevator, complimentary parking and wi-fi (in the rooms, too!), and a spa. Since we were only in the city for two days, we didn’t have a chance to head up to the spa but next time we visit, I am making the CBD massage a priority.

There’s also a new restaurant that just opened right next to hotel called Flood’s!

The Location

Located in Portland’s West End neighborhood, The Francis is in the perfect location for wining in dining and exploring all that Portland has to offer. Across the street from the hotel is Tandem Coffee Roasters, which we frequented during our trip. In the immediate area around the hotel there was also a cool flower/plant shop (my fave), a few restaurants, and Flea-For-All. I loved that we were close to the downtown area (a 15-20 minute walk, which we did multiple times during our stay!!) but were far enough away that we got to experience the local community and have a little extra quiet. We were also in a great area for visiting all of the Portland-based breweries and the central location made it easy to pop in and out during the day to change, rest, or use the restroom in between activities!

If you’re heading up to Portland, ME anytime soon, I highly suggest staying at this amazing hotel! The rooms on the first floor are also family and pet friendly.
