#TBSCon Recap

Last week, I spent a few days in Atlanta for a few days of fun with a bunch of blogger babes for The Blog Societies Conference.

Two weeks ago I packed my things (at the very last minute, I must add) and headed to the airport for a fun-filled blogging weekend in Atlanta for The Blog Societies annual conference. This was my first year going, and to be honest, I probably wouldn’t have made the effort to go if it wasn’t for Mariah! I’ve always been a little hesitant about attending conferences (especially for blogging!) because not only are they a huge cost, but they always overlap with the work week or require a lot of traveling and let’s be honest – if you go away for a conference, you’re not on vacation, you’re working!

What is The Blog Societies?

The Blog Societies was created by two style bloggers, Jess and Cathy, as a way to cultivate community among influencers all across the United States. Members of TBS not only gain access to the amazing community that allows them to network with their peers, but they also gain access to the resources and tools they need to grow their business.

The Venue

This years conference was held just 30 miles north of Atlanta at The Hotel at Avalon in Alpharetta, Georgia. The hotel was absolutely beautiful, the staff was so friendly, and the food — FREAKIN’ AMAZING (ok, so I mainly ate my weight in pimento cheese but that’s beside the fact). The hotel is located within the Avalon shopping mall area, which was super convenient since we didn’t rent a car and could walk everywhere we wanted to check out. I will say that the one downside of the venue for this year’s TBS Conference was that even though it was gorgeous, it was advertised as Atlanta when it was in Alpharetta.

Getting There

Getting to the venue was a whole other story….. Mariah (who I roomed with) was flying in from LA and I was flying in from Boston (duh) into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Our flights were getting landing about 25-30 minutes apart so we opted to Uber to the venue together which was a freakin’ disaster. First of all – it started to DOWNPOUR right after we landed (around 4:30) and since there was lightning, checked bags were delayed (it took an hour to get them if you were wondering) and by the time we got our Uber it was rush hour. If you’re unfamiliar with the Atlanta area and getting to Alpharetta from the airport, here’s a piece of advice: BOOK YOUR FLIGHT IN THE MORNING. We sat through an hour and a half of traffic (normally the drive would have taken 30-40 minutes), making us 30 minutes late for the welcome party.  From the time we landed to the time we got to the venue, it had been three hours. MAJOR EYE ROLL.

Night One: Welcome Party

As I mentioned, we were a little late to the welcome party and because of the rain, the party was moved from the outdoor patio by the pool to indoors. TBH, I was 100% fine with it even though it stopped raining because it was humid AF.

Hosted by Dress Up, Vera Bradley, Goody, Kendra Scott, Yankee Candle, Drybar, and La Croix, the cocktail hour was a time to mingle and network with the conference attendees and sponsors (and grab some swag!), which was a blast! Cathy and Jess both said a few words to welcome us to this year’s conference (I look thrilled, I know) halfway through the night, which was oh so sweet.

Drybar had a mini blowout station set up for us to get our hair fixed up (with a full menu of blowouts to choose from!), which was awesome after the long day of traveling we all dealt with. Once the party was over around 9 PM, a group of us headed to Marlow’s Tavern for some late night eats and a few drinks!

Day Two: Workshops, Workshops & More Workshops

Up bright and early for a day of workshops and learning, we ate a quick breakfast and got to work. Before heading down to the conference, we choose four out of six workshops that we were interested in attending (all taught by industry leaders) and once we arrived, we received our schedule. I opted to take accounting, photography, travel blogging, and SEO and blog design. I have to say, my two favorites were accounting and travel blogging – both were extremely helpful and answered many of the questions that I had.

After a busy morning of workshops and learning, we headed to lunch (sponsored by Mud Pie and Goody!) to refuel for the rest of the day’s events. And let me tell you – lunch was SO good. Starting with pimento cheese (my fave when I’m in the south) and ending with a mini trifle, the entire meal was delicious – especially the delicious (and massive) grit stuffed croutons that were served with the chicken caesar salad. GET IN MY BELLYYYYYY. Once we finished lunch, we attended two more workshops (maybe it was one? I forget already haha) before finishing the day meeting additional brands (and getting more swag!), including Colleen Rothschild, Pureology, Mary Kay, and L’Occtaine.

After Mariah and I got settled back in our room, we headed outside to shoot a few looks (including our welcome party outfits!) and do some work before doing it all over again the next morning! It was so amazing to be in a space filled with other women that understand blogging and the difficulties that come along with it. I’m sure a lot of you understand this, but blogging isn’t something a lot of people get. There’s a lot that goes into blogging and let’s face it: blogging is hard work. Props to all you ladies that have a 9-5 in addition to blogging!

Day Two: Keynote Speakers

Heading into the last day was bittersweet. I was ready to go home and relax but also wanted to keep learning and stay forever. We started with a breakfast hosted by La Croix and Ball, which was OH SO CUTE.

Fun fact: I never had a La Croix until TBS Conference and I have no idea why I waited so long. The raspberry is SO good.

Once we finished eating (and grabbing an iced coffee from Starbucks!), we all shuffled into the keynote speaker session, featuring Grace Atwood from The Stripe and Brittany Stevens from the Lawyer Lookbook. We talked FTC Guidelines, competition, do’s and don’ts of blogging and so much more. Once the keynote speakers wrapped up, we headed into the blogger panel session before finishing out the day.

Panels are such a great way to learn more about different individuals point of view on different topics in a casual setting. Alicia Chew, Noelle Downing, and Rach Martino got very real about pricing, sponsored posts, and their blogging careers and I left with a long list of things to do for my blog and a notebook filled with valuable information.

Before ending the conference, we had lunch (sponsored by Joules) and made adorable flower crowns while drinking champagne. I mean, what more could you ask for?

Mariah and I had both decided it was easiest for us to stay an extra night so we didn’t have to rush to get to the airport, which worked out perfectly. We got settled, had time to pack up all of our things and shoot some content. We ended the night sitting at the bar (eating pimento cheese) and doing some blogging before heading to Barleygarden Kitchen for dinner (and more drinks), which was the perfect way to end a busy few days.

Have you ever been to The Blog Societies Conference or another blogging/infleuencer-based conference before?
