Spring is officially here and I could not be more excited for the longer days and warmer temperatures. I’m excited to put my heavy jackets and chunky boots away and pull out my white jeans and lighter layers.
Over the last year, I’ve been much more intentional with the clothes that I have been purchasing (even though we’ve been home!) and it’s something I want to continue being intentional about moving forward. As I’ve started doing some shopping for the seasons ahead, I’ve realized that I really don’t like a lot of the styles and patterns that are out right now. The ruffles, the weird floral patterns, the impractical bag shapes. It’s all so weird and with things starting to return back to “normal” and seeing people more, they’re really making me feel pretty blah.
But in all seriousness, I know that a lot of you feel the same way.
Even though it feels like all I’ve been wearing lately t-shirts and jeans, I’m excited to add some new ones to the mix because let’s be honest – you can never have too many basics and there’s no way in hell I’m putting a tiered ruffle dress on my body.
The Basics to Always Have in Your Closet
Cotton Tees – The most essential of all basics. I truly believe everyone should have at least one white t-shirt and one black t-shirt in their closet. They’re easy to style alone, but they can also be layered under your favorite sweater, cardigan, blazer, or jacket.
A Great Pair of Jeans – When I’m getting dressed in the mornings, there is an 80% chance that I’ll pull on a pair of jeans (this percentage would be higher if I wasn’t trying to add more non-jean bottoms into my wardrobe). They go with everything and you need at least one pair in your closet. Dress them up, dress them down. I’m a big fan of Madewell’s high-waisted jeans (the perfect vintage fit is a new favorite of mine, too!) for everyday wear, even though they’re a little more expesnvie. SO worth it.
Classic Tote Bag – A classic tote bag is a must in any closet. They’re great for commuting to work, easy on the weekends, and never go out of style. With so many different size options out there, it’s easy to find one that works for your lifestyle and once you find a good one, I promise you’ll purchase it again and again for years to come. Two of my go-to tote bags are the classic transport tote (great for busy days!) and the medium transport tote (my go-to for running errands).
Classic Midi Dress – Okay, so this might not be what you would normally categorize as a “basic,” but it is an item that everyone should have in their closet. Midi dresses are a great option spring through fall, make you appear more put together than you probably are (at least, this is the case for me!), and are great for basically any event or activity you have planned. If you haven’t dipped your toes into the world of midi dresses yet, H&M has a lot of really great, affordable options!
How to Style Your Basics
Now that you have some great basics to lean on, it’s time to put together some outfits. While I do tend to wear the classic t-shirt and jean combo with a comfy pair of sneakers during the week, once the weekend rolls around, I do enjoy elevating these pieces.
Cotton Tee + Midi Skirt + Sneakers
Swap out your favorite jeans for a fun midi skirt and sneakers to elevate a comfy tee just enough! This is one of my go-to outfits for brunch since it looks put together, but is still comfy enough to be walking around and enjoying the weekend.
Blouse + Jeans + Sandals
Not warm enough out to say goodbye to your jeans? Pair them with a pretty blouse and seasonal sandal!
Midi Dress + Sneakers
Anyone else always think that midi dresses styled with sneakers is chic AF? Me too!
