Politics are one of the topics I have always avoided on my blog and social media platforms, partly because I want to keep my little corner of the Internet a fun and happy place that we can all escape the craziness of everyday life, even when we’re talking about the craziness of everyday life, and partly because I don’t know enough about politics to be talking about them seriously. Longest run-on sentence, ever – but it’s true. I have retweeted a politic tweet a time or two and posted about women’s rights on Instagram stories, but beyond that, I’m typically pretty quiet. Thankfully the Bad on Paper Podcast has a new monthly series covering politics and theSkimm does a great job breaking down what’s going on in our government.

Today that is changing.

Although I will not be talking about politics on here very frequently, I do think it’s important that I use my platform to talk about issues we are facing and our rights as women and our rights as humans.

Let’s start by talking about this t-shirt. When I first saw it while doing some shopping on the Vineyard, I didn’t really think much about it other than it was a cute graphic tee but then I realized what it stood for.

In January of 1973, Supreme Court case Roe v. Wade gave women the constitutional right to safe, legal abortions.

Women finally had the ability to legally make the decisions they wanted for their bodies. Can you imagine not being able to make choices for your own body?

Anti-choice activists are working tirelessly in the legislature, in the courts, and on the streets to take this right away and if Roe v. Wade is overturned, it will make it harder and less safe for women to obtain a safe and legal abortion. There are currently 16 pending abortion cases that are currently one step away from Supreme Court and depending on Kavanaugh’s vote, our right as women to safe abortions can be limited.

Did you know that by overturning Roe v. Wade, more than 25 million women are at risk of losing access to abortion?

It’s actually insane that we, as women, could potentially lose a fundamental right that so many of us grew up not thinking twice about.

Our bodies, our rules.

Here’s where this graphic tee comes in. Prinkshop has created a collection of t-shirts, sweatshirts, tote bags, prints, and stickers that spark conversation and benefit their corresponding not-for-profits. For every 1973 tee that is sold, Prinkshop is donating a portion of the proceeds to the National Institute for Reproductive Health to help in the fight for our right as women to decide what’s best for us, our bodies, and our families.

Tough topic. I have actually lost friends over different beliefs about abortion rights. I cannot imagine telling another woman what to do with her body, and I like that this tee shirt supports the cause without being combative, or even outwardly political. Sometimes subtle is nice.

Oh Roxy, that’s so disheartening to hear. It’s crucial for us women to join together and fight for our rights and realize that no one should be telling anyone what to do with their body.

It’s always interesting to hear others’ thoughts on this matter. I think it’s really important for people to be non-judgemental and open to hearing opinions that differ from their own without getting overly offended. I’m glad you took the time to share what’s been on your mind and heart!
