A Look Inside Our (Tiny) Beacon Hill Apartment

We are officially out of our little apartment on Joy Street and to say it’s bittersweet is an understatement. I loved our apartment so much and wish we could have stayed, but a ceiling leak that went unfixed for way too long, we made the decision to break our lease. I’m happy with our decision, but it was still sad to leave.

Now that we’re out, I wanted to share a quick look at the space we’ve been living with the last year and a half! There were a few projects I never got around to, but it was our home and I still loved it, despite its flaws.

When we originally started looking for an apartment in early 2019, we saw at least 20 units and every kitchen more or less looked the same: small, outdated, limited counter/storage space. So when we saw this unit, we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of space (the pantry was a lifesaver!) and storage there was, even though it was an odd layout.

Also, the mini appliances…

I was originally planning to make a few rental-friendly updates throughout the winter but we ended up signing our new lease so we held off. If we were staying in the unit, here’s what we were thinking for the space.

Kitchen Tools & Accessories

The bathroom was right off the kitchen, it was TINY, and the door didn’t close all the way. You can only imagine how getting ready for the day went when two adults were utilizing the space and a 70-pound dog pushed his way in. But again, it served its purpose. One thing I always thought was weird was the duo medicine cabinets, but it was nice to be able to have separate storage (plus under the sink storage!) for our things.

We did end up replacing the blind and adding this privacy film to the window so the blind didn’t have to be down 24/7. It was super easy to install and held up really well. There’s a million different patterns out there, too!

Living Room

Probably one of the most-shown rooms in our apartment (there were only 4 rooms, but still!!) on Instagram – the living room. With five big windows and facing the Charles, the view was amazing no matter what window you looked out of. The natural light was also amazing (just ask Caroline!!) and made our small space feel so much bigger.

When we first moved into the unit, there was a god-awful tapestry on the wall (plus the freakin’ leak in the ceiling!!) and when we took it down, we realized it was there to hide damage that we had no idea about. The wall was legit crumbling out. I probably shouldn’t laugh about it but it is what it is. Chris’ dad fixed it and we gave the walls a fresh coat of white paint, which made it look 10 times better.

Once we found out that we would be working for home, we added a desk for Chris to work from under the TV. Definitely not ideal, but it worked!

When we moved into the unit, Chris and I were both previously living with roommates and each had bedroom furniture, but nothing else so our bedroom definitely was the lowest priority when we moved.

See our bedroom plans & inspiration here.

Atlas, the bedroom really came together (minus a headboard) over the last six or so months and I’m bummed we didn’t get to enjoy it longer. After working from home on the couch for about 6 months, I ended up getting this bookshelf desk from CB2 and using it as a desk/nightstand.

We were originally planning on painting our bedroom the same color white as the living room (Snow Day from Clare) but ultimately decided we wanted to make more of an impact with the small space and opted for Current Mood by Clare and I’m so glad we did. I think that if we did go with white, the apartment would have been too white

Since there isn’t a whole lot of floor space, we opted to place our 3-drawer dressers in the closet to save space and frustration when getting ready in the morning. It worked out really well and I’m glad that the room didn’t feel more clustered than it already did.

There was also a little nook to the right of the closet with shelving, which was amazing. The the space between the floor and first shelf was enough for a taller laundry basket, and the remaining shelves housed our towels, linens, and other miscellaneous items.

And that’s the space! While it was stressful times trying to figure out how to situate furniture in our small apartment, it was cozy and it was our first place together. We did the whole puppy stage there, four flights of stairs and all, and it’ll forever have a special place in my heart. I hope that once the leaky ceiling is repaired (they started to ACTUALLY fix it the day we moved out!), that someone else loves it as much as we did.

While this place was so cute I cannot wait to see what you do with your new spot! The natural light in your living room though was amazing! Not to mention your decor.
