My Winter Skincare Routine

As much as I don’t want to admit it, winter is here and it’s wreaking havoc on my skin.

At this point in the game, we all know I have acne prone skin. It sucks and it can be über frustrating, but that’s the deck of cards I was dealt (is that the saying??) so I’m acknowledging it, making some changes, and moving on. I have noticed that there are certain factors that cause me to break out more than others (travel, seasonal changes, too many nachos….) and using products that work for me is my best chance to avoiding a breakout. With December (and the cold winter temps) just a few days away, I figured that right now was as good a time as any to give a few new products a try and switch up my routine to 1. help prevent as many break outs as possible and 2. combat dry skin.

And if you’ve been on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, basically any social media platform, over the last year, you know that everyone and their mother is speaking their praises about TULA and the amazing products that they carry. I figured it was about time to give them a try for myself to see if they’re really that good and spoiler alert: they are. I have been slowly (but surely!) incorporating the products into my routine to help avoid avoid the whole “13-year-old boy breakout” situation. I’m going to get into more detail below, but I did start with the TULA Acne Clearing + Tone Correcting Gel before adding the TULA Purifying Face Cleanser into the mix. My thought process behind this? The gel had *just* come out and I figured if it worked well, the rest of their products must be just as good!

My skincare routine is pretty simple compared to most, but it works for me. If you’re trying to figure out what the best skincare is right for you, always remember to apply products in the correct order in order to yield the best results.

My Winter Skincare Routine

1. Remove makeup/oil cleanse

If you’re still using makeup wipes to remove your makeup, STOP! They are so, so bad for your skin. I made the switch over to an oil cleanser, both to remove my makeup and double cleanse, about six months ago and it was the best decision I’ve ever made for my skin.

I’ve been using the Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Botanical Cleansing Oil and it leaves my skin feeling extremely clean and not in the least bit oily (something I was worried about!). If you’re hesitant to try it because of the price tag, I promise you it’s worth it! I only use 2-3 small pumps at a time and even after six months and an accidental spill, I still have half a bottle left! Plus, if you hate it that much you can just mail it to me and I’ll use it for you 😉 There’s also a travel size of it available if that’s more your speed!

2. Wash face

Once I’ve removed my makeup with my oil cleanser, I wash my face with the TULA Purifying Cleanser. I’ve been using this for about 3-4 weeks now and so far, so good! I had been using the Mario Badescu Acne Cleanser for a long time but the TULA cleanser definitely leaves my skin feeling more hydrated. and at night, I wash my face using the Clarisonic Mia 2 to ensure I get all the crap out of my pores after a long day at work!

A note on the cleanser: it does have a strong fragrance to it, which doesn’t bother me, but I know it could be a deal breaker for some people so it’s something to keep in mind!

3. Toner

Once my face is clean and I’ve patted it dry, I apply the Thayer’s Witch Hazel Toner with a cotton round to my face and down my neck a bit! If you’re new to the world of toners, they’re meant to remove excess dirt from your pores as well as remove any makeup you missed when washing you face.

If you’re acne prone like I am, a toner with Witch Hazel will also help exfoliate your skin. Plus, it’s a natural astringent!

4. Apply serum

Once I use my toner, I apply whatever serum I currently have in my arsenal and right now that’s the TULA Acne Clearing + Tone Correcting Gel. And guys, it is handsdown the best skincare product I have ever incorporated into my skincare routine, ever. It’s one of TULA’s newer products and it works freakin’ miracles and I started seeing results almost immediately (okay within a few days but still).

5. Moisturize

The key to success is your moisturizer. With the harsh winter elements, keeping your skin hydrating is so important and that means applying a moisturizer twice a day. Since your moisturizer is also the heaviest product in your skincare routine (before sunscreen, at least) you want to apply it last. I’ve been using the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream, which is a great basic moisturizer and keeps my skin hydrated. I’m about half way through my current one and in all honesty, once I’m finished with it I will 100% be ordering the TULA Aqua Infusion Oil-Free Gel Cream.

Other Products I Regularly Use:

  • Colleen Rothschild Clarifying Detox Mask c/o – I received this face mask at The Blog Socities Conference back in August and it’s so good! I had never tried any of the Colleen Rothschild products before but I’m really love this mask to help tame any light breakouts. Depending on the week, I’ll use it 1-2 times.
  • Mario Badescu Drying Mask One of my all time favorite face masks for combatting a breakout, the Mario Badescu Drying Mask is like the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion we all know and love but (essentially) in face mask form. When I have bad breakouts or when I will be traveling, this is the first thing I pick up and will use it every two or so days, depending on how bad my face is breaking out!
What does your winter skincare routine look like?

Ohhh I love reading other people’s skin care routines, the Tula Cleanser sounds amazing! I have to admit I haven’t really changed up much in my routine from summer to winter but I love the Kiehl’s avocado eye cream at the moment. Natalie x
