My Favorite Places to Shop for Affordable Work Wear

I am so thankful that I work at a company that allows jeans and t-shirt’s to be warn any day of the week, but that’s not the case for everybody. I do (on occasion) pull out my favorite slacks and something other than sneakers to meet with clients or to just look more “put together”. Plus, slacks are way comfier than jeans in my opinion.

When it comes down to it, wear-to-work clothing (i.e. slacks, pencil skirts, blazers, & blouses) is expensive. Once you’ve been working for a bit, it’s easier to add new work appropriate pieces to your closet because you’re used to your income, you’re able to budget, and you already have a bunch of work clothes so you only need to buy new pieces here and there to freshen up your wardrobe or replace items that are starting to look worn. For those that just graduated, started a new career path, or starting a new corporate job, buying an entire new work wardrobe (or at least enough clothes that people don’t realize you wore the same slacks three times last week) isn’t cheap and usually it’s not feasible.

Even though it’s not always feasible, purchasing a work appropriate wardrobe is necessary no matter what industry you work in (unless you’re one of the lucky ducks that gets to work from home). Finding pieces that are affordable is key and when it comes to my wear-to-work pieces, I look for price and quality, which isn’t always easy.

Here’s where I always go running back to (especially when there are sales):

J.Crew

One of my favorite places to shop for my work and everyday wardrobe. The perfect mixture between classic pieces and recent trends in addition to quality and the fit of the pieces themselves are all factors that keep me coming back. J.Crew has amazing sales that are totally worth taking advantage of and I am known to stock up on my favorite items during them!

Ann Taylor

If you work in a corporate setting that requires you to dress smart casual or traditional, Ann Taylor is the place for you! They do incorporate recent trends into their pieces but they’re still corporate appropriate and allow you to express yourself as much as you can in a suit. I am a huge fan of their Devin Fit Pants (I drool over all of the styles) and pick up a few extra pairs every time they have a 40% off sale (which is right now!).

Banana Republic

Banana Republic has so many amazing classic, feminine pieces that will make you wish your closet was filled with everything from their store. I’m a huge fan of their shoes and accessories for adding personality to your work wardrobe.

H&M

You can never say no to the prices at H&M, they’re just too good. While it might take you longer to find pieces that fit you correctly and are made from quality fabrics, H&M is a great spot to pick up basics, layering pieces, and dress pants, especially when you’re just starting off and on a tight budget.

J.Crew Factory

As a longtime lover of J.Crew, I am *obviosuly* a huge fan of their factory store. I typically turn to J.Crew Factory to purchase fun camis that I can layer under a cardigan or blazer, to try new trends, and to stock pile the Cotton Caryn Cardigan

Where are your favorite places to shop for afford work appropriate clothing?

Love those green pants and the details on that bell sleeve top are to die for!
I also work for in a pretty casual environment but have recently been feeling the need to “dress for the job you want, not the job you have” so I’ve been looking to revamp my post-grad wardrobe.
    Great choices for shopping!
