How to Style a Shirt Jacket

It is officially jacket season and while I am bummed that I can’t just walk out the door in whatever I please, I am excited to be able to wear some of my favorite layers again. One of my favorites of the season? The shacket. When the trend first started appearing a few years ago, I was a little hesitant. I don’t know what it is about oversized clothing that makes me nervous! But alas, I’ve finally come around to it and I love it more than I should admit.

When I first saw this shacket from Madewell, I knew it deserved a place in my closet but when I received it, it was not love at first sight. Yup, you heard that right. The oversized fit took me a few days (and try ons!) to get used to and now that I’ve gotten used to it, it’s my number one favorite piece of clothing in my closet. I have even designated it as my “dog walking jacket” on Instagram.

With so many shacket options available, it’s easy to find one that is the right color, fit, and heaviness that fit yours needs. I ultimately decided on the Madewell Belrose Shirt Jacket because of the plaid print (perfect for fall!) and because it’s more of a jacket than a shirt.

The jacket has a slightly oversized fit and is made from a poly/wool fabric and a fuzzy brushed bouclé outer layer, which will keep you nice and warm, even when the temperatures start to drop. And since it has a slightly oversized fit, you can easily fit a sweatshirt or chunky sweater underneath for colder days.

For sizing, if you want your shacket to be more fitted, I recommend sizing down. I ended up going with my regular size (medium) because I wanted to embrace the oversized fit.

How to Style a Shacket

The great thing about shackets is that they are so easy to style. Whether you’re heading out for dinner and drinks, walking your dog (like me!), or running errands, you can pair your jacket with denim, booties, your favorite leggings, lug sole boots… the options are endless.

Since I was desperately in need of a “casual” jacket that I could throw on with leggings and jeans to run errands, walk the dog, and explore the city, I opted to style mine as casual as possible. Nine times out of ten, I’m pairing my shacket with this long sleeve cotton tee, my favorite Levi’s, and my Sam Edelman Laguna boots

If I’m taking the dog for a walk, or running a few quick errands, I typically throw my shacket over a long sleeve tee, my favorite leggings, and these New Balance sneaks. Comfy and casual.
