It is no secret that New England gets some pretty harsh weather during the winter months and having good outerwear to keep you warm is the key to making winter a little less miserable. Over the years, I’ve realized you don’t have to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on outerwear to be warm, you just need to find the right pieces.
A few years ago, I stumbled upon this puffer jacket when I was scrolling through Nordstrom and always thought it was cute but wasn’t sure if it would be warm enough to hold up through a New England winter. Fast forward to last year and finally decided to order it while it was on major sale, and I haven’t looked back since.
Cole Haan Down & Feather Jacket Review
Even though it’s a lighter-weight puffer, the Cole Haan Down & Feather Jacket is SO warm! I recommend it for temperatures under 30 degrees (you’ll be toasty in it if it’s 40 out!) and have even worn it in single-digit weather with no issues! Now, I’m not saying you can get away with just a long sleeve under it if it’s 10 degrees out. When it is colder out, I’m usually good as long as I bundle up in a sweater, hat, and gloves.
The mid-length also covers your bum, which makes a huge difference when it’s windy out, or if you’re just wearing leggings! The zipper also goes up pretty far, giving you some extra fabric to nuzzle your face into on those really cold days.
This coat definitely runs small! I originally ordered my regular size (medium) and couldn’t zip it up over a cotton t-shirt so I exchanged for a large. The large also gives me enough room to wear chunkier sweaters (like this one!) without feeling restricted. The jacket also has an elastic around the waist that gives it a slimmer appearance, which I can appreciate!
This jacket is around $250 full-price (depending on the retailer) and I definitely think it’s worth that amount, especially based on the warmth and quality. This is my third winter with the jacket and haven’t had any issues with zippers, no fraying, or rips, even with the dog jumping on me.
With that being said, I’m going to tell you right now not to pay full price for it! It’s almost always on sale around $100-$130 (heck yes!) and I picked mine up for $80.
Tips for Styling Your Puffer Jacket
When it comes to styling a puffer jacket, the options are endless! There are so many different styles, thicknesses, and lengths available so you’ll want to start by figuring out how you’re going to wear your puffer coat and how you’d ideally like to style it. My goal for my puffer jacket is to stay warm (and not look like the Michelin man), so when it comes to styling my jacket, I opt for styling it more casually. Think oversized sweaters, leggings, casual sneaks (or in this case, lug boots!).
1. Opt for a Slimmer Silhouette – There are so many puffer jackets on the market right now that aren’t as puffy as other options. If you’re looking for a jacket for mild temperatures or travel, this jacket and this jacket are great to pair with more elevated pieces.
2. Wear it Over Your Favorite Activewear Pieces – My favorite way to style a puffer jacket! Activewear is already casual (but slightly elevated, especially compared to activewear/loungewear 5-10 years ago) and a puffer jacket just adds a fun element, while keeping you warm.
3. Pair it with Slimmer Pants & Tops – To avoid adding extra bulk to your outfit, opt for wearing your puffer jacket over slimmer pants and a body-hugging top. If it’s really cold out, make sure those pieces are heat-retaining so you don’t freeze!
