Ahhh, holiday traditions.
Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays – the music, the smells, the time spent with family, it’s always so magical.
Growing up, we had our fair share of traditions, holiday parties on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, putting cookies out for Santa, and a set-in-stone process for opening our presents on Christmas morning. As we’ve gotten older, we’ve stepped away from some of these traditions and have created new ones that work for our current lifestyles and I’ve loved being able to have a say in these new traditions as an adult.
While we don’t do very much on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, I’ve always loved piling up on the couch together to watch The Polar Express on Christmas Eve. It’s one of my dad’s favorite holiday movies and he watches is several times throughout the holiday season (I don’t know how!!!) and we always roll our eyes about having to watch it again, but it’s our little thing.
On Christmas morning, my brother (although he is 20 years old…) loves waking us up early to open presents before eating breakfast together and piling up on the couch.
Although I do like Christmas Eve more than Christmas Day, my absolute favorite tradition we’ve started over the last few years, is piling up on the couch after breakfast on Christmas and watching movies together all day. Did I mention there are cocktails involved? Well, there are!
After a hectic holiday season, I love our slow Christmas activities. Watching movies, playing a game or two, having several cocktails, and just being lazy.
This Christmas will be Chris and I’s second holiday together, and although we will be heading to my parents to spend time with them on Christmas, I really wanted to create some of our own traditions this year.
Our Holiday Plans
I am SO excited to be spending some one-on-one time with Chris before celebrating Christmas this year! Our plan is to do some exploring around Boston and ice skating on Frog Pond on Christmas Eve with a few friends before having a quiet night at home and then doing gifts and stockings together on Christmas morning before heading down to my parents and partaking in our Christmas traditions with them!
What are your favorite holiday traditions?
