Fall Basics

The best part of living in New England? Being able to experience fall and the gorgeous foliage in my own back yard.

5 Fall Basics to Add to Your Closet

Leather bag for fall

Despite the off-and-on rain over the last week, the fall weather here in Boston has been amazing! Sure, we basically skipped the gorgeous 60 degree days and went straight to late-fall temps, but we’ve definitely had some warm fall days sprinkled in there. I’m about it. Plus, fall fashion? The best!

Over the last several weeks I’ve been working on purging my wardrobe of all of the items I haven’t worn in 6+ months (not including occasional wear) and adding in several new pieces, most of which have been sitting in my online shopping cart for months. Since I do work in a start-up-like environment, the dress code is very casual, making basics my go-to. They’re easy to mix and match, they’re comfy, and easy to layer during the chillier months.

Comfy and warm fall basics

If you’re ready to update your wardrobe this fall and need a push in the right direction, here are four basics to start building your fall wardrobe.

A Great Pair of Jeans

I’ve been struggling to find a great pair of jeans over the last six or so months. I used to swear by J. Crew’s denim, but quite frankly, I haven’t been very impressed with the fit of their clothing recently. I’m petite and curvy and I feel as though the fit of their clothing isn’t ideal for those with curvy figures. SO, I used Madewell’s most recent sale as a chance to give their denim a try after hearing amazing things about the fit and I’m OBSESSED. I opted for the 10” high-rise skinny fit and they fit perfectly (minus the length, but nothing a good tailor can’t fix – more on this in a few weeks!). The best part is that they’re extremely slimming (and comfortable!) and the rise of them works perfectly with all of the cropped-style tops that are oh so trendy right now. I don’t know about you, but I’m not trying to have my stomach hanging out!

Comfy Sneaks

I’ve been a Nike girl for as long as I can remember but decided to give Adidas sneaks a try when it came time to replace my “wear everywhere” sneakers and I can’t say enough good things. The Swift Run comes in a handful of fun colors and for being under $100, they’re a great sneaker to try when making the switch to Adidas!

Still not convinced? I love mine so much that I ordered my mum a pair for her birthday!

Transitional Coat

Although I haven’t been the biggest fan of J. Crew’s denim (or the company as a whole), I’ve been wearing their jackets for YEARS and they’ve all held up very well. I’ve seen this boiled wool coat all over social media and I can see why – it’s the perfect transition coat. I must say, I did get the deal of the century on it during a 40% off sale (I also had a 15% off coupon that could be combined with other offers and a $10 reward) so I only paid $106 for it (originally $228). After a few weeks of wearing it in a variety of temperatures, I’ve concluded that it’s a great transitional coat (think between 45 and 60 degrees) but I 100% wouldn’t purchase it at full price to wear into the winter. It’s only the one layer of boiled wool aka no warm lining, so it’s not as warm as I would hope. With that being said, I do walk around two to three miles each day through the city so if you drive to work and just need an easy coat to wear during your commute, I would say to make the purchase but wait for a sale!

Versatile Tote

Whether I’m running errands on the weekends, heading to my local cafe to get work done, or community into work, having a versatile tote to carry my belongs (which sometimes includes a camera, laptop, and my regular day-to-day items) is crucial. Large tote bags are amazing but when I only have the basics (i.e. wallet, sunnies, a tube of lipstick, and eyeglasses) on me, the extra space drives me NUTS. When it came time switch out my OG bag for a new tote, I knew the medium transport tote from Madewell would be perfect. I love that it only has the front pocket and inside zipper so I’m not tempted to carry things with me that I don’t need and it fits my 13″ laptop for the days that I’m trying to get work done.
