Edgartown Martha’s Vineyard Travel Guide

Edgartown Martha's Vineyard Travel Guide

I can’t believe summer is coming to an end and it’s been a full month since we headed down to the Vineyard for a few days of R+R. We had so much fun on the island and it was so nice to be able to spend time with the family locally instead of having to hop on a plane to a tropical location.

Edgartown Martha’s Vineyard Travel Guide

Where to Stay

During our stay in Edgartown, my family actually rented a house from a friend for the week. They were all down on the island from Sunday to Sunday and Chris and I went down after work on Tuesday night and stayed until Saturday evening. We were about a 5-minute walk from downtown Edgartown, which was super convenient, especially since we only had one car to use between all of us.

Whether you’re going down for a day or two, or a week, renting a house (or staying in an Airbnb) is a great option. Having easy access to a kitchen makes meals much easier and you have space to relax. If renting isn’t in the budget, there are also several great hotels in the area.

Other Lodging Options in Edgartown

Vineyard Square Hotel – A quintessential New England beach-town hotel, the Vineyard Square Hotel is in the thick of downtown Edgartown and offers great amenities and a convenient location to everything the town offers.

Harbor View Hotel – Located along the shore of Edgartown, the Harbor View Hotel has recently been restored and each of the rooms features neutral colors, natural light, and a great view of the Edgartown Lighthouse.

The Sydney – Chic, contemporary, and full of color, The Sydney is compromised of two buildings; one being the home of whaling captain Charles Williams Fisher. Situated along the harbor, the hotel is also home to l’etoile restaurant, the original building has eight rooms and the new building features 14.

The Kelley House – Sitting right next to the Vineyard Square Hotel, The Kelley House is located within a traditional New England colonial and has a bocci court out front, bikes to use during your stay, and has the best location out of all of the hotels in Edgartown.

Hob Knob – I have to say, Hob Knob is very cute. The classic Gothic inn is located right on Main Street and even has a spa on the property!

The Christopher – The Christopher is a full-renovated 15-bedroom boutique hotel with eclectic decor and colors, and oh so fun! The hotel has an on-site fire pit, free wi-fi, and beach chairs and towels for guests to enjoy.

Where to Eat & Drink

When it comes to vacationing, a majority of our time is typically spent eating and drinking. Thankfully, we were in a house this time around so we saved a little bit of money on that front

Rosewater – The cutest little coffee shop/bakery/market I have ever freakin’ seen and I loved it so much I wrote an entire blog post about it. Right off of South Summer Street, Rosewater is conveniently located to all of the cute shops in downtown Edgartown and has the best coffee and muffins ever. Get the raspberry chocolate chip muffin, you won’t regret it.

Espresso Love – I honestly am not a huge fan of Espresso Love (there’s one near my office in Boston!) but we popped in our first morning on the island for a cup of coffee and wifi so we could check our emails. If you do stop in, I would go the coffee route, I’m not a huge fan of their food offerings!

Bad Martha Farmers Brewery – Although I am not a huge beer person, several people told us to check out Bad Martha’s and since it was only a 10-minute walk from where we were staying, we were all for it (also Chris loves beer so). Their Edgartown location is located among a nursery and has a large outdoor area with games, which was super fun! The cheese plate and the 1/2 cheese, 1/2 meat plate were delicious. I died for the candied nuts, SO GOOD. For beers, we tried the 508 IPA, grapefruit beer, Morning Glory, and the Belgian White. All are delicious but I liked the grapefruit the best.

Town – Chris and I wanted to grab a bite for dinner alone one of the nights we were on the island, but since we were pooped most nights, we decided to head to Town for dinner on Wednesday night (only a 5-minute walk from where we stayed!) and it was delicious. I ordered the Ain’t No Lemonade and Chris went with the Blueberry Mai Tai for drinks, we shared the mac and cheese fritters as an app, and both got the steak and cheese hoagie for dinner. So delish!

Scoops – Ice cream is a summer staple, right? Scoops had a bunch of ice cream flavors, as well as frozen yogurt and gelato, making it a no-brainer dessert option.

Rockfish – If you’re looking for a good espresso martini, Rockfish is the place to go. Chris and I brought my mom for dinner one night but also went back for drinks one night with my dad. The food is pretty basic American, but is so good.

What we ordered: Espresso martini, Pear Martini, Italian Cold Cut Flatbread, Greek Salad, Pulled Pork Tacos

What To Do

So many activities, so little time. One of my favorite things about the Vineyard is that even though it’s small, there’s so much to do. Whether you enjoy sitting by the pool/beach or are activity-driven, there’s so much to see and explore on the island.

South Beach – During our stay, we only did one and a half days at the beach – The weather wasn’t great most of the time and we wanted to adventure around the area! We did end up at South Beach for our beach days though and the first day we were there, I’d never seen larger waves in my LIFE. They were massive and I ended up getting pulled in when I was only in up to my calves and honestly thought I was going to die. Yes, I cried. I also lost my hat and sunnies to the ocean which was a total bummer, especially because it was only our second day on the island. The second day we went, there were no waves – GO FIGURE. Other than the nutty waves, the beach was awesome and has some bathrooms and changing rooms, making it easy to clean up post-beach.

Oak Bluffs – I hadn’t been to Oak Bluffs in years and honestly, I don’t have any plans to go back. Since the ferry goes into Oak Bluffs, it’s hard to avoid it but because of the ferry, there are a lot of people in the town that are just visiting for the day. Lots of souvenir shops, quick places to eat lunch, etc. When we visited, we walked around the gingerbread houses and were back in Edgartown in under two hours.

Shopping – There are so many cute places to go shopping in Edgartown, and one of my favorite spots (Slate) is actually opening a store in Charlestown this fall, which I’m super excited about. If you’re visiting Edgartown for the first time, I suggest stopping into the following: Black Dog (duh), Slate, Salte, Edgartown Books, Nell, American Rhino, and Fat Face.

Bad Martha Farmers Brewery – Again, a great spot to relax, grab a beer, and have a bite to eat.

Edgartown Lighthouse – Located right outside of downtown Edgartown, the Edgartown Lighthouse is situated in front of The Harbor View Hotel and is surrounded by beach, water, and fishermen. Walking over to the lighthouse with my dad on Saturday morning was my favorite memory of our entire trip. We checked out the lighthouse and collected shells along the shore for 45-minutes and it was amazing.
