Let’s face it: Mornings suck. Maybe that’s pushing it, but a lot of people all over the world struggle with getting up and moving in the morning. I personally enjoy being up in the morning before everyone else, it’s the time I’m most productive, it makes grocery shopping a little bit easier, and it gives you a couple of extra hours each day that a lot of other people aren’t taking advantage of. The tone of my morning typically reflects how the rest of my day is going to go, so I always try to take every opportunity to set myself up for a kick ass day. Here are 6 ways to kick start your day and make sure it’s a good one!
1. Outfit Prep
Think back to all of the times you were running late. I’m guessing a large majority of those times were caused by not knowing what to wear that day and changing your outfit at least five times before leaving the house. I’m also guessing you weren’t 110% satisfied with the outfit you decided to wear that day, too.
Whether it’s at the beginning of the week or the night before, having an outfit prepped and ready to be warn on a specific day will for sure lower the amount of hectic-ness you face in the mornings. Even if it’s just an idea or two of what to wear, it ends up helping you in the long run much more than you would think. Now all of those times you were running late due to outfit dilemmas will start to fade and you’ll improve your mood getting out of the house in the morning.
2. Make Your Bed
Ah, remember all of those years your parents yelled at you to make your bed in the morning? They definitely had a reason behind it. Not only does it look better, but having your bed made and being in a clean space will have a positive effect on your mood. Who wants to come home after a long day to a messy space? Not me.
3. Use a Silk Pillow Case
One of my absolute favorite ways to kick start my day is to have a great nights sleep. I’m all about the sleeping atmosphere – a dark space, a comfy mattress, good pillows, you get the gist. And since we spend a third of our lives in bed, why not invest in a couple *great* pillowcases while you’re at it?
The Slip Silk Pillowcases are hands down the best pillowcases I have ever used, ever. Ordinary pillowcases can leave your skin creased, your hair to pull and tangle (which leaves your hair damaged and broken!), and do a number on your skin itself but these silk pillowcases leave you frizz-less, crease-less, and your skin feeling more moisturized than ever. The sleep mask is also a great item to add into your routine for a little extra uninterrupted beauty sleep.
Since I started using my Slip pillowcase and sleep mask every night, I have noticed less break outs (hallelujah!) and I can typically get my blow outs to make it to second and third day hair. Less breakage, better skin, I call that a win-win if you ask me. The amount of time I spend on my hair in the morning has also been cut down drastically thanks to the decrease in breakage and the increase of washes I can skip before really *having* to wash my hair. HOLLLAAAA.
4. Put the Tech Aside
Instead of reaching for your phone to check your emails and social media first thing in the morning, put it aside for 30 minutes to one hour, cook yourself breakfast, stretch, and enjoy the early hours with no interruptions. Most of us are using technology all. day. long. so having that break in the early morning hours is just what you body, your eye balls, and your mood needs. My favorite thing is to do some morning yoga stretches to get my body woken up and ready to start the day.
5. Embrace the Sunlight
Ever wonder why you seem more tired and drained during the winter than any other time of the year? It’s because of the lack of sunlight. The vitamin D your body makes when your body is exposed to sunlight can have a positive effect on your energy and mood. When I was in college, I made sure to always keep my blinds cracked so that I would wake up each morning when the sun came up. WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MADE. I got to the point that I woke up like clock work at 7am each morning and I always looked forward to waking up to the feeling of the warm sun on my skin.
6. Don’t Hit Snooze
At this point you probably thing I’m insane. But hey, mornings are great man. It’s an adjustment to get up right when your alarm goes off in the morning and not hitting snooze 12 times but I guarantee you it will make you feel 10x better. Getting up on your own terms instead of an alarm going off every 9 minutes for an hour straight can help with the grogginess and zombie state you most likely experience every morning. Apps like Sleep Cycle wake you up during your lightest sleep phase instead of when you’re in a deep sleep, which is healthier and better for having energy first thing in the morning!
